The SI-2K from SiliconImaging provides 2K footage recorded in Cineform raw format with non-destructive IRIDAS .look files applied in camera or in post. The camera system is based on standard PC technology and is very modular. The camera head is detachable and can be used as a small, lightweight, tethered head, or the head fits on the digital video recorder (DVR). The DVR is esentially a camera form laptop running windows embedded. There are a number of important differences from a regular laptop, such as the camera body, battery mount, camera mount, rod mount, 12V XLR in and out.

Most importantly, the camera is recording a 2K image in a raw format. This is essentially the difference in still cameras between using a raw file format or taking jpgs. The raw image gives the ability to make color decisions, exposure decisions and set the white point after you've taken the picture. While you still have to focus and expose your scene, the camera provides visual indicators on-screen indicating what's in focus and what's exposed properly and provides greater than 10 stops of dynamic range. Most importantly, the camera uses the CineForm raw codec yielding very little compression artifacts.
